The Student Services Department coordinates a comprehensive health program for the school district. Its goal is to ensure health awareness and promote healthful lifestyles among students and staff. The monitoring of immunization forms, distribution of health-related information, and health screenings are coordinated through this department.
Some of the responsibilities of the nurses include:
Promoting the maintenance of health and the prevention of illness
Promoting students’ physical, emotional, and social development
Offering medical care (under the direction of the district Registered Nurse or as directed by a Physician) to students and staff
Monitoring vital signs including pulse, respiration, and blood pressure, etc.
Monitoring weight and height
Updating health information on students
Assisting with preventive health screenings and assessments (hearing, vision, scoliosis, etc.)
Evaluating for health needs and reporting information to the district Registered Nurse
Monitoring the immunization status of students and submitting a report to the district Registered Nurse; Assuring that students are in compliance with state immunization laws
Working with the district Registered Nurse to create a Health Advisory Council for the district
Assisting the district Registered Nurse in coordinating services with community resources (physicians, dentists, etc)
Assisting the district Registered Nurse in conducting health counseling with students, parents, and staff
Serving as a role model to students and staff
Assisting with emergency care procedures in the school
Evaluating and monitoring communicable and nuisance diseases
Assisting in the promotion of the system’s Wellness Policy
The School Nurses support the school staff by providing health related classroom and/or staff presentations and serving as a resource person for students and staff. They are responsible for providing the training for school staff in the proper administration of medication. The nurses also serve as liaisons between home and school for health concerns and provide information concerning community health resources.
